In 1996 UV Systems plc (now part of the WEDECO Group) won the 'DTI SMART Award for Innovation' to conduct research into the use of ultraviolet light to disinfect public swimming pools. The trials produced important data on the benefits of UV treatment that lead to installments of full-size, low-pressure UV units into a number of municipal pools. The results have been remarkable, exceeding the expectations of both the pool operators and the company itself.
